Shut Down Windows Vista Faster

Logically when somebody turns down their Windows it should be done by approximately 15 – 20 seconds. The delay occurs when Windows check on the cleanup process before it considers it complete safe to shut it down. This includes closing all the open applications, processes, ending up any running services & writing any pending cache date to the disk.

And sometimes it takes progressively longer and longer to shut down.

There could be several reasons behind this so called delay. Here in this article We The Geeks will pin point few of them along with their solutions.

Though if you ask me, I would recommend you not to Shut Down at all. You can always use the “Sleep” Feature as you can leave all your documents open along your games & other stuffs & can even Start windows almost instantly. But in some cases it’s not preferable as it can cause Vista to slow down and become even more unreliable.

Win Vista sometimes postpone writing data to the disk to improve performance. This is called write caching, and as a consequence, Windows takes time before you shutdown to make sure all data queued to be written is actually, physically written to the disk before cutting down the power.

Behind Vista’s smooth GUI (Graphical User Interface) runs several Applications, services & background programs. Before Shutting down the windows it has to make sure that all the applications are safely saved/cached and closed. If in case any of these applications, processes or background applications stops responding there’s a built in delay before Windows will force these tasks & processes to end. This is called built in delay or timeout, & the best part is that we can speed up the shut down procedure by changing this delay times

  • Go to Start > Run
  • Type in “regedit” & Press “Enter
  • Access “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop”
  • Double Click “WaitToKillAppTimeout” Value

(1000 = 1 sec, By default the value would be 20000/ 20 sec, change it to 2000/ 2 sec)

  • Enter the same value in “HungAppTimeout

But still windows will prompt to hung up application but it can be set to automatic without asking by this simple trick.

  • Open Edit > New > DWORDValue (32-bit) & type “AutoEndTasks
  • Then, double-click “AutoEndTasks” and enter 1 (one) to automatically end tasks or 0 (zero) to prompt before ending tasks (the default).
  • Close the Registry Edit when you are done & Restart

Note: You’ll have to restart Windows for the change to take effect.
